Field Trip Overview

As part of the curriculum of the BSCS and BSIT in the Institute of Computing, the 3rd year standing students are required to enroll in the subject Field Trip and Seminars. It is composed of three different models namely Model A, Model B, and Model C. And we, the third batch of the Field Trip and Seminars chose Model A with 1 Major Field Trip outside Mindanao, 1 Minor Field Trip within Mindanao and 2hrs Interpersonal Skills. The major fieldtrip was five days stay in Manila, while the minor fieldtrip was held in Davao City.
The Public Safety and Security Command Center located at Sandawa, Matina was the government institute that we visited for our minor fieldtrip. There, they discussed how their office works as a government institute. Since Davao City has plans on becoming a smarter city, the PSSCC started using technologies such as CCTV cameras. Apparently, they have more technologies but we were just limited to some information regarding the CCTV cameras traffic lights since some information are confidential.
The CCTV cameras in PSSCC are used to monitor the drivers who abide the laws. Through these cameras, they could zoom in 36 times so that they could record the plate number and the violations, and send the information to the LTO. They could also monitor whenever traffic accidents occur or if crimes are happening. However, PSSCC are only the eyes so they have to connect to the government institutes such as 911, or the police to take actions in some circumstances. And as a proof that the cameras are indeed useful, they showed us videos which they caught in the act.
The traffic lights were also controlled by the PSCC and they briefly explained to us how important the traffic light is. Another is, the people who needs to cross the pedestrian lane should also push the button on the traffic light’s post or just wait for the lights to indicate that it is safe to walk. They also explained that accidents often occur to those who do not follow the simple rules or even just the traffic lights.
Aside from those technologies, their head officer mentioned to us that Davao City is planning to be a Smarter City and use the advantage of technology to further enhance the capabilities. They are also collaborating with the IBM to integrate the operations into a single system. With all of this, I must say that Davao City is totally changing for a better future.
I am also glad that we got the chance to know the security operations of our city, not to mention, they warmly welcomed us.

Appendix

            Recommendation

The minor fieldtrip is held within Mindanao, and for our batch, we had it at PSSCC here in Davao City. Somehow, finding company here in Mindanao especially in Davao is kind of hard since we don’t have several ICT companies. But still, it’s a good thing that we found an institute in Davao which accepted us. Truth to be told, when the officers had a meeting, we thought of different companies in Mindanao and we came up with big companies. But in the end, we ended up in PSSCC but I’m not saying that it was bad and such. Actually I enjoyed the minor fieldtrip and we also learned something new and even astonished, it’s just that, I think there are still better companies out there.
So for the incoming officers, though the PSSCC is a good place to visit, please also consider other companies in Davao. Or if possible, look for other big companies outside Davao City. It is always better to explore and learn new ideas from other environment. However, if you also wanted to know the technologies used in security operations in Davao, then I must say the PSSCC is the perfect place.
Another is that, unlike in major field trip, the minor field trip only takes one day so for the students, it would be much better to make the most of it. Make the most of it in a way that, they should listen well, take some notes and take tons of pictures. There would be no other day so they’ll be making regrets if they failed to do so.
Lastly, even if it is just a minor field trip, they should enjoy the moments spent. After all, it is still a field trip.
